The Indianapolis Youth Orchestra would like to add its collective voice to the voices of many individuals, organizations, governments, and grieving people around the world. Like so many others, we are heartbroken and mourn the loss of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers. We support the protests that this tragedy has sparked, and acknowledge the centuries-long history of oppression, violence, and prejudice that is the backdrop for this senseless act. As an organization dedicated to the musical education and development of young people, whose mission is profoundly peaceful and life-affirming, we stand in solidarity with protesters and the calls for justice.
The IYO and its Board of Directors are in the process of formulating a set of action steps to contribute in some small way to this broader movement calling for justice and equity. Although our organization has throughout its history been firmly committed to diversity and inclusion, we know that we can do more, and that there is more to do. For now, all of us at the Indianapolis Youth Orchestra send our deepest sympathies to the Floyd family and all those so profoundly affected by racial injustice. We believe that #BlackLivesMatter.
